Foosball for Phonics Raises Funds for Children's Books

On Sunday, our First annual Foosball for Phonics Tournament rocked a back room of the vast Kennedy's Irish Pub / Curry House in North Beach. Fifteen teams participated in the fundraiser for our new Jr. SCORES writing program.

SCORES' own Roberto Gil took home the championship prize along with his partner Laura Walpert. "She did everything," a modest Gil said after the victory. Walpert's deft and dynamic striker play helped team "Gold Jerry, Gold" cruise through the field without losing a game.

Second place went to another SCORES team, Shannon Burns and Othmane, a late entry and tournament dark horse. Prizes went to the top four teams and included gift certificates from SCORES sponsors Adidas, Sunset Soccer, and Sports Basement.

Proceeds from the tournament will go towards purchasing the books for our Jr. SCORES Spring writing curriculum. Some of the books include "The Sneetches" by Dr. Seuss, "The Great Kapok Tree" by Lynne Cherry, and "Michael Recycle Meets Litterbug Doug" by Ellie Bethel.
