I Am From…
Jasira Gay from Sunnyside

I am from an incredible mother who holds me in her heart.
I am from a family who loves to have fun.
I am from a sun and a moon who brightens up the day.
I am from the love of animals.
I am from the speed of cheetahs
I am from a place with lots of things.
I am from hugs and trips to the beach.
I am from an incredible universe.

Where Am I From
Kenneth Lee from Sunnyside

I am from the games of the computer
I am from the game widely called football but soccer
I am from a sunny school
I am from the depths of my mom
I am from me.

I Know You Are But What Am I
Lorenzo Arroyo from Paul Revere

I know you are smart,
but I am smarter
I know you’re cool,
but I am awesome.
I know you’re fast,
but I am tricky to get.
I know you’re a leader,
but I am a better leader.
I know you are a good writer,
but I am an even better writer
I know you’re hungry,
but I am The Chef.

I Am From
Stella Quintanilla from Paul Revere

I am from a family who takes care of me
I am from a family that my mom makes her own food
I am from a family who loves me
I am from a family where my grandma makes good food
I am from a family who gets me toys I want
I am from a family who helps me with my homework
I am from a family who takes me to school so I can play soccer
I am from a family who makes me happy
I am from a family who makes me laugh
I am from a family who shows me movies that are cool

That’s Me
Vanessa De Leon from Marshall

I am like a polar bear that never gets cold
I am like the wind that always goes on
I am brave as a lion and I never give up
I am fast like a cheetah and fuzzy as a bear
I am as happy as a minion and clever as a dolphin

Today is the Day
Sasha from Marshall

Today is the day I scored a goal
Today is the day of America SCORES
Today is the day that we won the trophy

Today is the day we got those poems in the book
Today is the day we were the best

By the Way
Cora Cost from Marshall

Did you know
That this cookie never crumbles
When the rain comes
Even then I don’t fall
Sometimes trouble calls
But you and I stand tall

When light shows,
Then I might stumble and fall
I hop back up no sooner than the sun rises
Not one crumb fell from
This tower
Of love

Every hour
I ponder the tower
Of questions from each hour
Why this?
Why that?
You know why: because this cookie never crumbles

Life is Ending
Cora Cost from Marshall

Live like every day is your last
Our life is our cast
Till that day we have once healed
Then we peel
We come out just like a butterfly in the night sky
We will cry an ocean and then we will sigh
All night we run a never-ending race
Every line you trace,
Someone else will pace
Then the one day where
We say this is finally the end of race, we all pay

My Journey
Erik Hamilton from Moscone

My journey begins when the waves crash on the shore
My life is a journey of childhood
My journey is a snake crawling up my throat when I am sad
My journey is a book waiting to unfold
My journey is a time of life

Unbroken
Bosco Tan from Garfield-CYC

Steel is unbreakable; nothing can destroy it
Family is unbreakable because my love is strong
Gold is unbreakable because it is buried deep underground and hard to find
Friends are unbreakable because they share
Soccer balls are unbreakable because my hands cannot break plastic
I am unbreakable because I am a defender

My Dad is Special
Tyler Taylor from Hillcrest

I remember…
My Dad.
He’s not a violent person,
My Dad.
He’s the one that stops them when they are about to fight
Sometimes,
You can hear gunshots in the air
BOOM BOOM
I feel like there is a bullet fast as a flash going a thousand miles per hour through our house
My Dad
He says choose peace, stop violence
He helps the community learn so we don’t hear gunshots anymore

Untitled
Heaven Lee from J. Serra

I am from gun from gunfights and broken windows
I am the heart that will never be broken
I am a person that is walking light on my feet,
Ready to speak about my family’s rest of the week
I am from a place with good food like chicken nachos and chips
I am a person that won’t stop moving
I am a person who loves all 3 of my brothers
I am who I am. Me.

I Am the California Queen
Maicely Zelaya from J. Serra

I am that strong California queen of liberty
I am the strawberry banana smoothie I love to drink
I am the beautiful crescent moon in the night sky
I am like my mom asta el ultimo pelito
and the smell of my mom
I am a kid that doesn’t want anything from others
I just like my life how it is

I Am Like My Mom
No Name from J. Serra

I am like my mom from head to toe
That beautiful smile who used to call me princesa
I am like my mom who cooked delicious food
Who showed me how to sew
As brave as a warrior
Who used to tell me si me muero siempre segirias en la vida
I still tell her you will always be in my heart
I will never forget her last words
I love you all
My last words to her
I love you more than you love me

Together
Maripaz Garcia from Longfellow

Wherever you go
In this world I’ll come along.
We dream together.

Monster Party
Ricardo Perez from Longfellow

Monsters went to a
Party and they said sorry.
They made a big mess.

Buying a Smile
Gabriela Olivares from Longfellow

I came to buy the biggest smile on the shelf
Because I scored a goal.
That smile I bought worked better than ever.
I got hurt and returned my smile into sad lips.
I should have kept my smile because
My mom bought tickets to go see Barcelona.
I went to the store,
Looked for my smile
And it wasn’t there
A better kid deserves it.

Mexico
Perla from Flynn

I’m from Mexican food
Like tacos, tamales, soda and spicy food
I’m from soccer
Like Jelenas, passing, cool tricks and goals!
I’m from party
Like dancing, DJ, fight and food

Untitled
Rosalina Olomira from Bret Harte

Animals are wild but so am I
They play in the woods but I play on the field
They love to play all day and they are everywhere in the bay
That is how animals are
Just like me

I Am Myself
Madina Anjum from Bret Harte

I am the quick growth of a blooming flower.
I am the brains of a calculator.
I am the smell of fresh and early morning.
I am the girl that saves the day.
I am someone you can never force to stop being me.
I am myself.

I Am
Jennifer Iraheta from Longfellow

I am honest for myself and others.
I wonder if honesty sometimes could go bad.
I hear a whisper in my ear that says tell the truth.
I see where honesty could take you.
I want to be an intelligent person.
I am a fearless kid.

I pretend to disappear when I hear a loud noise.
I feel a little bit of frustration.
I touch the tip of my heart saying things will be alright.
I worry when there is a disaster coming.
I cry every time I see an emotional movie.
I am a fearless kid.

I understand when people feel sad.
I say kind things to people.
I dream that I will be a successful kid.
I try to do my best not to mess up.
I hope to solve all problems.
I am a fearless kid.

Field of Dreams
By the E.R. Taylor Select Team
November 7, 2014

The time is 2:40 and I’m getting excited
Its been a very long time, I’m not gonna fight it
We wait for the bell, its about to start
I look over my shoulder, there’s no more black patch.

Our community had a dream, more like a story
We wanted to play soccer without a worry
Cuz every time I came home
My parents would hurry
To clean my cuts and bruises and hear my stories

Now we have a brand new patch of green
Sometimes I think, “is it just a dream”
We got a gift, our very own field of dreams
Our whole community gets to use it
But I really enjoy it with my SCORES team
So we say thank you for our very own patch of green

Now if I fall it won’t hurt
We are the E.R. Taylor SCORES team
And we welcome you to our Virginia Dold Field of Dreams.

Bright Star
By Ariana from Hillcrest

I am as bright as a star that shines in the sky that explodes on my heart that lives
In my life everywhere I go I follow the star that lives in my heart
I pretend I never see it but I do see it.
I am feeling the fresh breeze of the air but I do not feel it
I feel the hot sun
I am going to melt
My heart beats and beats everywhere I go.
The star I follow everywhere disappears
The hot sun goes away
The night comes and my heart stops beating fast.
The bright star that shines on my face and the fresh breeze of the air
Make me relaxed.

The Moment
By Samantha from Hillcrest
Knowing that we would arrive in the morning. It was dark with flashing lights and the smell of a new car, a grey new car. I was against the seat on my grey koala pillow pet, asleep, asleep, dreaming…I woke up one eye then another. As I woke up I didn’t know where I was. It was morning, it smelled different. It smelled like palm trees and the sky was pink, cotton candy pink. It was almost like heaven. At that moment I realized I was in LA.

The Other Team
By Johnny from Hillcrest

I used to think they foul me.
Now I know they are really good soccer players. That love to play a lot of soccer and they are like me when they play soccer.

Untitled
By Devaury Alme from Hillcrest

I am generous
I wonder if I will ever see my uncle in Seattle
I hear the 2020 run when I am calm and relaxed
I want to feel free as a butterfly
I am compassionate and generous
I pretend to be confident
I feel like nothing is moving and I’m in space.

I touch my kitty waiting for my uncle to come
I worry about my other uncle passing away
I cry when I’m sad
I am generous
I understand the rules are right
I say compassion is empathy.
I dream about going to Seattle where my uncle is
I try not to be judgemental
I hope school will make a difference.
I am generous.

I pretend to move faster to catch its prey fast.
I touch the tiger fur when I’m going to attack.
I worry when I can see my family.

Soccer Is…

The Sky of a Million Colors
By Lesley Anne Chua from Lakeshore

My sky, sky of a million colors, with its many
vibrant colors glimmering in the dark sky.
With its red as red as blood-red apples
Its orange as soft as a lovely sunset
Yellow bright as the blazing sun
Green as a grassy field at dawn
Blue as the delightful icy blue sky
With violet as rich as dew covered lavenders on a spring day
And pink as a flower blooming slowly
Sky of a million colors, my sky.

Make Others Believe
By Aysia from Lakeshore

Make others believe
I am strong and not scared
Make others believe
That I’m not the same
produced out of a factory
I want to believe that
I can fly away from danger
Jetting away with speed
Unknown I do not want
people to think I’m my
sister nor brother
I am me
I am not going to make
people think I’m not smart
I don’t want people to think
I’m selfish, a cancer
I am a friend
A teacher
Willing to give
I need people to believe that
I’m always here
I am what I think
I am.

Proud
By Javier Chel Silva, Marshall Elementary School
When I bite in the chicharones it brings back the memories of when I was in Mexico and el paletero always used to stop his little carrito and give me my paleta of fresa or Nuez. And also when I used to sneak in my abuelitos room after dinner and he always used to say – mijo ven aqui no le digas a tu mamá tomalo. And it was cocacola.
When me and my friend Jose used to go out to the street and we used to hit las botellas de cocacola with our marbles or our rocks.
I am from the elote with mayonesa and queso.
It brings back the memory that
I am
Mexican American Proud.

y tambien cuando sueño no puedo dormir
pero soy una gatita pequeña
y soy un perrita cuando cierra mis ojos
y soy una bailarina bailando por todos partes.

I remember when my hair first got flat-ironed by my mom.
After she washed my hair it was all poofy!
Then she sat me down and I saw the hot comb, the blow drier, and the flat iron.
The steam was getting in my face and it was making me sleepy.
I had a good night’s sleep, and when I woke up in the morning my hair was straight and I was happy!

Mi Nicaragua is when my stomach estaba rumbling y no se if it was of my hunger or the airplane engine
If my Nicaragua estuviera aqui yo estuviera playing naked in the streets con my brothers y hermana

Be high in the sky
Don’t fall with feelings
Like a pile of water
A full pond filled with water
Rain drop feelings
The thing is,
You don’t want to be like the water.
You want to be the happy times.
What does the sun do to make it happy?
Thrilled.
Over joy
Opportunity
Happy is going up
Not down.

Fire
Red, orange, yellow the color of the flame.
Red, orange, yellow easy to blame.
Hot not cold, smoky and bold
Fire is hot, it can burn gold

Earth
Earth is rocky but don’t be shocked
You wont be poked by one of those rocks.
Earth, the rigid land, that which reminds me of my stubborn friend

Water
Blue, clear, and sometimes green
Water lends life to us and everything
Ice, liquid, and even steam
Water cools, purifies and clean

Air
Shoosh, air goes as it whistles pass your ear

I Am
By Alex Alvarez, E.R. Taylor Elementary School
When I feel sad I get mad
Like a tiger without food
My teeth are like sugar
That you put in corn flakes
With just the bright amount
It can be perfect!!

I got a golden heart
That will never break my soul
I can live time after time
Til I am 100 years old!!

I can become wealthy
And stay healthy
So I can accomplish all my dreams
And make them come true!!

My mind is holding all that I know!
My brains keep rolling like a soccer ball!
My imagination, I speak out of my mouth
My goal is to be a great poet
A champion of champions
Yeah!! That’s me!!

Me
By Bridgette M., E.R. Taylor Elementary School
Today I feel like a balloon going free
That when I’m blind, I can actually see
I’m a diamond so shiny, so bright
That I’m like the sun showing all the light.

Today I’m a free land
So free, that I’m a new brand
I feel like a bank with money
So rich, that I’m as sweet as honey!!!

I feel like going round and around
that I’m never going down
I feel like a bird making sweet sounds
That if I get lost, I will for sure be found.

When I’m happy
I’m a perfect circle
That never have gaps!!
I am perfect,
Just the way I am.

My Life
By Neftally Paredes, E.R. Taylor Elementary School
I’m happy when I play soccer
I feel so happy in my life
It was my brothers birthday!!
Such a fun time!!!

I feel tired of running
But I won’t give up!!
My teammates keep cheering up
And I will not give up on that!!!

When I get a gift. I’m happy
You can see me smile and shine
I shine like the brightest star
To reach me you’ll have to jump high!!!!

If I get surprised I jump in fright
I get the hiccups but I don’t cry
When I read a book it’s interesting
I go on adventures, I play up in the sky!!!

My life I spend it so happy
Especially on holidays
My family gathers to celebrate
I am happy with my life

My Mom
By Oscar Martinez, E.R. Taylor Elementary School
I love my mom
Because she will always love me
On and on
I will always love her
Till she’s gone!

I love my mom because
Even though she doesn’t buy
Me the things I want
That’s okay!!
Only thing I want from her
Is to stay

I love my mom because
On Saturday game days
She always cheers me on
I love her because
Each game day
She brings me food

My mom is no like the rest
If there is a test of beauty
She passes the test
She has more than beauty she is fabulous
Glorious and special… so you want to know
Who she is?
She is my mom!!!

when he was born.
I am from my mom’s singing
when she is happy.

I am from the beautiful voices
where people I love sing.

My Origin
By Gennesis Galindo, Hillcrest Elementary School
My name comes from the beginning of the Bible.
My name comes from my Mom who named me because she loves the way it sounds like an angel’s whisper.
My middle name Natasha comes from my Dad, who plays soccer, his name is Nato and they added –asha to the end.
My name is special to my family.
My name is hard for people to pronounce.
My name is so long people try to make it shorter.
My name isn’t always going to be perfect, but it’s my name. No one can judge it.

Untitled
By Stephany Vasquez, Hillcrest Elementary School
When people say
my name, I feel
like it represents
my country,
shiny and proud
to say. My dad gave
me my name when
I went to his hands.
He said softly
like  wind, Stephany!
He was proud.

My great, great, great
grandmom, she was strong
as a hawk, fierce like a lion
that comes close and near.
She has my name.

Dia de los Muertos
By Jasmin Arevalo, Hillcrest Elementary School
My sister died when she was 2
I will never ever see my sister.
Once I went to her grave. I asked my Mom, “What did you bury her with?”
She said, “Her most beautiful dress hand made by mi Abuelita, with a toy”
When I knew that I had a dead sister I was sad and surprised.
I dream about her, she looks like a white little angel sparkling in the sky.

Loud
By Sophia Stephenson, Garfield Elementary School
I am a loud spirit that can be heard from a mile away
I am from an active life, not a lazy one
I am from the blue planet, a beautiful place
I am from the words, “If you are in trouble, stand up for yourself.”
I am from the words, “never give up, no matter what.”
I am from the people of the world that want peace not war.
I am from outer space, a mystical place.
I am from the city of the bay, a great place to play.
I am an ordinary girl, but different in a special way.

“Blue Is Me”
By Sara Trujillo, Leonard Flynn Elementary School
I smell sky,
Blue feels like a feather.
Birds can be blue
Most of the time,
It is mostly a big, moon whale.

Blue could be the sound of wind,
It’s like a whisper.
I see the darkest water in the ocean
Through the living room window.

I hear the husky howling
In the Alaskan snow, I can
See the reflection of blue
On his fur.

Blue is me.
When I come home from school,
I see my family happy.
That always makes me
Sparkling blue.

The Incredible Goal
By Christian Morales, Hillcrest Elementary School
The ball is hitting the net.
When I make a goal I explode with happiness.
I see the goalie, he’s jumping in the air, diving for the ball, but not quite getting it.
“Swosh” I hear the ball. My sweat is dripping down my back.
I point my fingers up and imagine God clapping.

Me, I Am
By Dalia Leverman, Hillcrest Elementary School
I am from a beautiful flower that I’m named from.
I am from a field where I play and kick soccer balls.

I am from a language called Spanish that I speak when I go home.
I am from a school that is cool and friendly.
I am from a family that is clumsy and lovable.
I am from a rainbow flower that changes colors.
I am from the earth that changes every day.
I am from America Scores.
I am Dalia.

I Found a Rock
By Justin Rubio, E.R. Taylor Elementary School
I found a rock it was pretty heavy so
When I picked it up I fell on my
Knee it hurt but I didn’t care
Did I mention it was gold and shiny

I found Simon he had a
Diamond it was as big as a bike
He gave it to me for that shiny rock

I found a found but there
Were arms holding it, I inserted
the diamond and it gave me the fossil.

I went into the pueblo
And traded it for a treasure chest.

The chest was full of treasures
I had already found so I sold
It for an adventure

On the adventure I found
My destiny, found more treasures
And got wealthier.

From the Bottom of my Heart
By Ira Yusi, Hillcrest Elementary School
From the bottom of my heart lives Jaden because she makes me laugh and she has my back.
From the bottom of my heart lives my niece. Sometimes she is so peaceful like I don’t know if she is there. Sometimes she has so much energy like a crazy ball bouncing everywhere.
From the bottom of my heart lives puppies. I go crazy over their cuteness.
From the bottom of my heart lives friendship. You should pick the right people and treat people right.
From the bottom of my heart lives music. One kind of music I like is soulful music.
From the bottom of my heart lives SCORES because they are my family.

I’m Because of This
By Pradipti Lama, Redding Elementary School

I used to be a goal,
And now I am a soccer player.
I’m now a fairy, rock star, and soccer play
‘Cause I have improved my thunder.

Nature
By Jaden Roan, Hillcrest Elementary School
Nature to me is plants and extinct animals
I don’t want any more extinct animals at all
I’m so scared of bees, Buzzz…
Sometimes I am as scared as a deer just seeing a person
I love seeing Redwood trees, looking up and smelling the oxygen in the forest
Sometimes I wonder how tall Redwood trees are
I walk in the forest and feel the heat of the sun on my skin

My Dad Is
By Will, Redding Elementary School
When I see my dad I see me
When I hug him it feels like a warm blanket on a cold winter’s night
When we eat, we are like hungry lions on the prowl
When he and I play catch and he says “Go Long”
I feel like a dog playing fetch with a stick and having fun
When I smell him, I feel like i fell into a pile of roses.

What I Feel About Soccer
By Estefany Ajin, Paul Revere Elementary School
When I’m by myself and I close my eyes,
I’m a book that a student took,
I’m a soccer ball that falls,
I’m a whale that always fails,
I’m the Fall that brings winds tall,
I’m the girl that snuck a look,
I feel like a blue tire dancing through a fire,
I feel like a bee that is free in a tree,
I’m a soccer player shaking like a flare,
I’m a heart that is very smart,
I’m the eye that is in the sky,
I’m a ball that goes shopping at the mall,
I’m tough like a rock with a lock,
I’m sneaky like a fox hiding in a box,
I’m whatever I want to be,
And anything I care to be,
And when I open my eyes to see,
What I care to be is me!

Adidas Cheetahs
By Laura Abangan and Lemoni Tillman, Carver Elementary School
(Lemoni)
We are the Adidas Cheetahs
We work together we play together
And the water we drink makes us strong and healthy
We might win or lose
We give high fives anyway
And after the games we feel a-okay

(Laura)
We are the Adidas Cheetahs
We work together we play together
Because we are kids
And that’s what we like to do
We like to run and kick the ball
We like to do our fun drills
We like to win but
It don’t matter if we lose
Because we are the Adidas Cheetahs
And we are a team (word)

I Remember
By Jazmine Bailey, Carver Elementary School
I remember when my hair first got flat-ironed by my mom.

Then she sat me down and I saw the hot comb, the blow drier, and the flat iron.
The steam was getting in my face and it was making me sleepy.
I remember I had a good night’s sleep and when I woke up in the morning my hair was straight and I was happy!

Because a bad thing happened.
Crazy people appeared in my fun time.
Emotional I always am.
Fun is gone from me, and forever.
Good people become bad people.
How would I get out of this sadness
My mind is ruined.
My best friend tried to stop my sadness.
People say I’m crazy and mean.
Laugh is what I never do.
My happiness is gone from me.

But he responds honestly
Is he holding me back, no
He is giving me a strong heart

Stars Are Above Me

And the first thing I see up in the beautiful sky—
Is my dreams.

Be Careful
By José C., Marshall Elementary, San Francisco
What if we could turn into
Werewolves on a full moon
And then change back very soon?
It would be a disaster,
But I would still be their master.
I would give the day off to all
And they would go racing to the mall.
They would run into the boundary
And they would have to do the laundry.
In the night we would all eat hen
And everybody would be happy- especially the men.
Everybody would drift off to sleep,
And no one would make a peep.

My Name is Riley by Riley D., Sunnyside Elementary, San Francisco

I like my name because my name means
a long stream in Ireland

My name is special to me

and water flows like life flows.
Time goes by fast and I don’t intend on wasting it.
I believe that I can make a difference.

Poetry is the Key
by Pedro P., Cleveland Elementary, San Francisco
Poetry is the key to life,
It’s what gets you pumped up,
Poems could be thoughts,
Poems could be feelings,
It doesn’t have to rhyme,
It doesn’t have to shine,
No matter where you’re at or
Where you’re going
Poetry will always cheer you up.
Poetry is beautiful,
No matter if you’re 7 or an ancient fossil.
Poems could be fun,
Poems could be funny,
Poems could be anything,
Poems encourage you to get back up,
To not give up,
It doesn’t have to be big or small
It just has to come from the heart.

Why do you Bully Me?
Sianna M., 4th Grade, J. Serra Spring 2013
Why do you bully me With your hurtful words?
When you call me names like Freak and Nerd.
Why do you bully me,
Pushing me and shoving me?
You can’t do this one thing
And that thing is Loving me.
Why do you bully me with your hurtful Lies.
Every day in my classroom I sit there and cry.
Why do you bully me?
Why do you bully me?
It’s just a question,
Why do you bully me?

When I See Bullying
By Mahina N, J. Serra Spring 2013
When I See Bullying I feel like a ticking Time bomb.
 When I’m involved with bullying
 I feel small, like I’m
Digging my grave and/ lying in it.
 Bullies are like the ghosts
 in pac man,
 Trying to survive.
 They won’t get through
 me Any more

What did they Call You!?
Jocelyn, 5th Grade, J. Serra Spring 2013
Everybody says to
Everybody names,
 Like porkchop or skeleton
  Fat like an elephant.
But I was tired of being
  bullied.
I was called a tomboy.
 I was sad.
But then I got my respect
 Because I could beat the
 boys.
 They treated me
 like a friend.

Awake vs. Asleep
By Jamal, Juan Carlos, and Raquel from Webster Elementary
Spring 2013

Asleep: We are Team Sleep

Awake: We are Team Awake

TS: Sleep smells like roses.

TA: Awake doesn't have one smell. We get to experience it all.

TS: Well, we get to imagine it all.

TA: Awake could taste good or bad. The possibilities are endless.

TS: Sleep is an endless buffet of imagination. There are no limits. Everything is free and in abundance.

Even the homeless can go there.

TA: When you're awake you can actually help the homeless, and nothing tastes as good as real food.

TS: Sleep is an endless pit of relaxation. It's like a relieving pill. Being awake is a pit of stressful pain.

TA: Relaxation in the real world is so much sweeter and you can actually achieve your dreams.

By Samuel Lawrence, 3rd Grader at Redding Elementary
Fall 2012

Oh No!
It’s a math invasion!
Hurry up, What’s the equation?
5+8? 2+9? Help me now!
I’m losing my mind!
It’s blowing up!
It’s burning down!
It’s flying all the way out of town!
Addition, subtraction, multiplication, division
What’s the answer?
What’s your decision?
I hope it ends
I hope it ends
So math and I can once again be friends
Now I’m free!
From the math invasion!
I don’t need the equation
We finally have a relation
And now it’s time for relaxation

Blue
By Jose Madrigal, 4th Grader at Cleveland Elementary
Fall 2012
Blue is like the shiny sky in the morning
It’s like surfing on a tsunami
It sounds smooth like walls
It taste like Ice cream balls
It moves gently around the world
Blue is like you
But it’s true
Blue doesn’t go with black or green
It goes with the sky
That’s what I think

  SOCCER!!!
By Edgar Munoz, 5th Grader at ER Taylor Fall 2012

When I’m on the soccer field
I feel like a brave knight with a shield
I feel fast like a bull.
When a dog drools
With respect to the other team
And the referees, in hopes of it not
Becoming a jamboree.
The whistle blows! The game is over
And the crowd let’s out roars!!
My team won, of course!
Then when we get together
We stay as a team forever
When we win the championships
I hear pirates sending off canons
From their ships… wait, it’s the crowd
Letting out a big roar!!

My country has the flavor of CORN
My country I miss
My country came to my heart
My country I’ll never forget
I left my country to be with my family

Dear El Salvador
You're small
But you're special to me as my life
Because i only loved my country
My country has beautiful malantiales
My country is a special for their crops
My country has beautiful landscapes
My beautiful country always remember you!

Granadas comemos
En el otoño

Otoño te puedo ver
Por la ventana
Otoño no te bayas
Por favor te voy a extrañar

When I Come Home

Dalia, Longfellow Elementary
October, 2012

When I come home

My sister goes to work
at her restaurant
My mom is at work
My dad is in Mexico
My two small sisters
are at their babysitter's
house
I'm alone
I am always going to my room and watch the tv
but when I want to go to the bathroom or
I'm hungry
I'm scared
I feel like someone is on
the door!
Like a monster is going
to jump out the
window!
I feel like bloody mary
is in my mirror!
When I'm with my sister
my two I'm still scared.
When my mom comes
I feel calm.

Turtle

Haley G.
Longfellow Elementary
October, 2012

My favorite animal is a turtle.

It makes me sad because it got sick.
I had to take it to Petco.
I'm never gonna get my turtle back.
That night I bursted into tears.
The sickness is that he shell was weak.
I never want to replace my turtle.
When I came home from Petco I ran into my room and locked the door.
I ate ice cream and hugged my bear.
I feel empty when I look at its cage.
A couple of months later my dad bought ten fish
in my turtle's tank and they all died.
I flushed them down the toilet.

What is Green

Sam L., 3rd Grade
Redding Boys
October, 2012

Green sounds like a forest.  With monkeys and lions and birds and zebras.

It looks like a swamp with alligators.
Crocodiles turtles and frogs.
But most of all most of all most of all
It looks like pollution with smog.
Caterpillars are part of nature, like green is
It tastes like unripe strawberries, squashes and gourds
and pears, but it really tastes like brocoli.
Green like walls of an ecotastic room.
With a Brazilian flag that's super rad!
But lizards are awesome too.
Green like a snake, like a vine, like my eyes.
Green like jealousy too.

Red is the color of a strawberry,

Cherry and the inside of a
Water melon.  It is the color of
Shoes and a crab on the beach.
Red is salsa and R & B.
Red is a blinding color blinding me.  It
Is the fresh smell of roses
Blooming in the spring.  Red is the
Color of love and fall leaves.
Red is dangerous, very actually.
It is the juicy smell of
Grilled meat on a summer
Afternoon.  Red is cool and it
Will stay like that forever.
Red is the 49er’s colors running
Through my vanes.

By Laura, Hillcrest Elementary

It’s a wonderful world but they made a few mistakes

Like leaving out unusual things we can make
And putting in scary snakes
Like no reading minds, no flying high
No predicting the future, and people not being mature
Like rushing, especially rushing poets
Like needing to hide something but then show it
Like everyone caring way too much about perfection
And making bad organizations
Like no sugar lakes, Good thing there is sugar flakes
Good thing there is things like cookies, cakes and shrink dinks.
To make, one big mistake is snakes.
It’s a wonderful world but they made a few mistakes.

I used to not have control of my class, but now they know the drill
Kennedy used to not write at all, but now he does…sometimes
The kids used to copy down whatever I had written on the board, but now they are finding their own creativity
I used to read all of the lit moments, but now I write my own (though some of the students don’t believe me)
I used to be hard-pressed to find kids to share, but now everyone wants to
I used to not put the journals on the desks before class, but now I do and class runs much smoother
I used to think the first day of school was crazy, but now I know that the day after Halloween is much crazier
I used to look forward to soccer days, but now I’m more excited for writing days

What I’m Made Of

I’m not a blank page poet

An empty stage poet
A yellow light
Podium fright
Sandwich bread

Cold soup
Raccoon goo
Winter droop
Kind of poet.

I’m a hummingbird poet,

A messy room
Bendy spoon
Green lagoon kind of poet,

A first snow

Up and go
Orange stew,
Green tea glue,
Pupusa belly,
Late night deli,
mango jelly
Kind of poet.

I’m a 7 names,

No shame,
Angry flame kind
Of poet looking
For a cot.

I’m the kind of poet

That’s more things than I’m not.

I Seem To Be, But Really

By Jen Gilbert, Writing Coach, Sunnyside Elementary
November 2011

I seem to be a teacher but really I’m still a student.

I look like an American but really I’m a citizen of the moon.
From afar I look white but if you look close you’ll see my nose is purple,
my ears are yellow and my hands are most definitely maroon.
I seem to always laugh out loud but what sounds like laughter sometimes are really tears.
I may look like I’m alone but really I’m surrounded by the stars,
And while you think I’m standing still, really I’m dancing salsa to the beat of passing cars.
I seem to be a poet but sometimes I’m afraid to share my soul.
I seem to be in love but I’m usually afraid to share my heart.
This poem seems to end here but really I’ve forgotten where to start.

Death doesn’t frighten me at all

By Jen Gilbert, Writing Coach, Sunnyside Elementary
November 2011

Robbers in the night

Holding out a knife,
That doesn’t bother me at all.

I can make them laugh

Make them snack on trash
No they don’t frighten me at all.

Big dogs with teeth

Looking for fresh meat
That doesn’t frighten me at all.
‘Cuz if I call them honey
They turn all soft and cuddly
No they don’t frighten me at all.

Spiders, scorpions, huge parades of ants

No they don’t frighten me at all!
I’ll turn on my giant hose
With the extra sprayee nose,
Then they can’t bother me at all.

And love?  Bad love?

Like saying, “Boy I love you!”
And hearing  back, “You smell.”
That doesn’t frighten me at all.
I’ll just find a magic broom
And fly up to the moon,
And snuggle in her arms until I’m well.

And death?  Ha! What’s death?

Some big black cloud?
An  empty room of loud
Tigers clawing at my shoes?
Oh death—you make me laugh!
If I’m not frightened,
By anything in life,
Why in the world
Would I be afraid of you?

Crazy Candy Dreams!

By the Cleveland Boy's Team
October, 2011

O’l Hallows eve is getting near,

As it gets closer my dreams make me shiver with fear.
Everything is haunted,
Nobody is safe,
Chainsaws are after you, knives flying towards your face
People caught in fire-not escaping the flames!
Ghost coming out of shadows.
Darkness on all sides,
Evil coming at me and all I do is try to hide.
Werewolves are howling, witches on their brooms
This nightmare has drowned me, filled me full of doom.
All things seeming scary, but then it finally came.
I woke up from my nightmare, so glad I’m not insane
So glad the nightmare is over
All these CRAZY CANDY DREAMS
The price of eating too much candy,
Won't do it next Halloween!

I Was A…

By Citlalli, Cleveland Elementary
October, 2011

When it is about to be Halloween

I go with someone in my family to buy a costume
I was a pirate.
Or I was once a funny pumpkin
With a funny orange wig
And a funny orange dress
And funny orange boots
I was a princess
Mom and Dad bought me
A Snow White costume
A Cinderella costume
A Sleeping Beauty costume
And other princesses
I was an angel
Beautiful, shiny, and white
I was a witch
Black and scary

Halloween

Jose Camara, 5th grade, Marshall Elementary
October, 2011

On a Halloween night

take the freeway and go right
You’ll see a haunted house
filled with rats and a big mouse
If you try to escape
You’ll see a man with a red cape
Dare to turn around
You will see a giant hound
Don’t even go upstairs –
it will be filled with nightmares
If you stay alive
You will be attacked by a beehive
Anyways, you will be dead -
and somebody will be holding your head

Halloween Rap

By Chris, Miguel and Xu Dong, Redding Elementary
 October, 2011

Trick or treat, smell my feet! Where does

the ghostly sleep?
Sleep, trick or treat lots
of sweets.
I wonder where the witches sleep?
Do they brush their teeth?
They sleep under my bed
and try to lop off my head! do
zombies come out at night or do they
stay out of sight?
Do zombies smell good or do they
stink like garbage?
Do ghosts sing?
Or do they
dance?
Is Halloween scary--should
I go out and maybe get a fright?
Trick or Treat
Should I stay inside
or go treading in the night?

El Fantasma

Por Rose Mary Rivera, 5to grado, Mission Education Center

Fantasma loco eres espeluznante

Como el hombre de la nieve
Por tu color palido
Loco y feo
Oscuro envuelto
En tu manto blanco
Espiritu malo y Oscuro
Niebla tienes y tu cara y cuerpo
Lo tienes lleno
Con nieve y hielo

The Ghost

Crazy ghost, you are terrifying

Like a snow man
With your pale color
Crazy and ugly
Dark, wrapped up
In your white blanket
Dark and Evil spirit
You have fog and your face and body
are covered
with snow and ice

Today My Name Is Gothic

By Erin Garcia, Redding Elementary
October, 2011

Today my name is gothic.

When I walk in the room,
I feel so mad.
When I change my clothes, it's always
Black
my make-up and everything is
Black
Black
Black.

Yesterday my name was Stinky.

I slept in a trash can
next to another person like me
I felt alone.

Tomorrow my name will be crazy

I bump my head against the wall
five hundred times
confused.

Today my name is dragon

I feel that I am eating pizza
I pretend I am relaxing
Yesterday my name was Ricardito
I heard I was huggable
I found I was adopted
Tomorrow my name will be Ricardo
I will forget that my mom threw my soccer balls away
I will remember when I was a dragon

Nothing  Will  Stop  Us  From  Soccer

By  Hailey  Gamez, Longfellow Elementary

Longfellow is great, achieving, strong, and happy.

Even if we lose, we are still going to keep trying.
We still want to play.
We are always going to be a happy school.
There is nothing in the world that will stop us from soccer.

Hoy Mi Nombre es Fuego

Por Marcela Flores, Longfellow Elementary

Hoy mi nombre es un Fuego ardiente

Siento muchas cosas

I Seem to Be, But Really

by Monday Rentería, 5th grade, J. Serra Elementary
October, 2011

I seem to be a dead flower

But really, I’m a flower that grows each and every day
I seem to be a teenager messing around and watching movies with my friends
But really, I’m a sleeping dragon, awake, loud and clear.
I seem to be a black plain rock
But really I’m a shining star next to the sun
I seem to be a little girl, but I am a strong woman in the future
Really I’m a woman in the future, holding my head up and reaching the sky
I seem to be a loving girl in school and I seem to be funny and calm
But really I’m just a girl living each day by day, living and proud to be alive and in a house.

Nature’s Fury Doesn’t Frighten Me

by Faith Daniels, 5th grade, J. Serra Elementary
October, 2011

Volcanoes erupting

Lightening flashing
Nature’s fury doesn’t frighten me at all.
Lava oozing and boiling
Lightening coming fast
Nature’s fury doesn’t frighten me at all.
Earthquakes rumbling
Storms destroying
Nature’s fury doesn’t frighten me at all.
No, not at all.

It’s a Wonderful World, But They Made a Few Mistakes

By Mahina Novoa, 3rd grade, J. Serra Elementary
October, 2011

It’s a wonderful world, but they made a few mistakes.

Like leaving out the milk, and putting in elk.
Like no snow days, no wind days.
It’s a wonderful world, but they made a few mistakes.
Like BBQ on hot days, especially ice cream on cold days.
Like making your heart stop every second and making it start again.
Like everyone caring about someone lying.
It’s a wonderful world, but they made a few mistakes.

Life Doesn’t Frighten Me at All

by Jacqueline Garcia, 5th grade, J. Serra Elementary
October, 2011

Bugs on my wall,

Spiders on my bed,
Life doesn’t frighten me.
Yellow jackets around me,
Clowns talking to me,
Ghosts in my ceiling,
Tigers chewing meat,
Life doesn’t frighten me at all, no, no,
Life doesn’t frighten me at all.

I Seem to Be, But Really

by Siana Martinez, 3rd grade, J. Serra Elementary
October, 2011

I seem to be really shy,

But really, I’m not.
I seem to be a flying bird in the sky,
But really I’m just a girl who likes to eat pie.
I seem to be hyper,
But really I’m just being me.
I seem to be crazy to my sister,
But really I’m just acting.
So that is my poem and that is the end.

It’s a Wonderful World, But They Made a Few Mistakes

By Ariana Resendiz, 4th grade, J. Serra Elementary
October, 2011

It’s a wonderful world, but they made a few mistakes.

Like leaving out dinosaurs, and putting in so much hate.
Like no happiness, no love,
no fairy godmothers, or putting in hugs.
Like being scared, especially being robbed.
Like needing to be hugged.
Like everybody caring too much about stuff.
Am I important? Of course I am.
My mother sees it, so does my dad.
So listen up ladies, right now, and here what I have to say.
It’s a wonderful world, but they made a few mistakes.
Like putting in ugly, but I don’t hate. So why don’t you get that straight.

Life Doesn’t Frighten Me at All

by Stacy Pérez, 5th grade, J. Serra Elementary
October, 2011

Bugs in my mouth, the restaurant in the south, life doesn’t frighten me at all.

I play in the park, but only when it’s dark, life doesn’t frighten me at all.
I hug my clown, I bought it downtown, life doesn’t frighten me at all.
I like to sing, because that’s my thing, life doesn’t frighten me at all.
I like eating flowers, because it gives me power, life doesn’t’ frighten me at all.
I see the devil, I passed the second level, life doesn’t frighten me at all.

It’s a Wonderful World, But They Made a Few Mistakes

By Daniela Ballardo, 5th grade, J. Serra Elementary
October, 2011

It’s a wonderful world, but they made a few mistakes.

Like leaving out freedom, and putting in slavery.
Like no school lunch, and mean teachers.
Like needing to leave, especially when you’re having fun.
Like needing to pay the bills when you’re barely getting enough to eat.
Like everyone caring way too much about prettiness.
Like letting there be no help when a person is hurt.
Like having one teacher when there are thousands of children.
Like leaving out peace and happiness, and putting in wars and no jobs.
Like leaving out a warm shelter for everyone and putting in homeless people all over the world.
It’s a wonderful world, but they made a few mistakes.

ABC poem

By Makayla Carrico, 3rd grade, J. Serra Elementary
October, 2011

Papa making pie in the kitchen

Quietly walking down the stairs
Rufus going woof woof!
Sliced a piece of pie onto my plate
Too tired to care about the bus
U missed your math test
Volcanoes exploding in your class
Waiting in line for lunch an hour
Expelled from school
Finally back to bed, a new day begins

Remember Me

by Rajab Darmousa, John Muir Elementary
October, 2011

What will they say when I've gone away?

When my body's in a grave and my soul will be saved.
I wonder if they will remember me and all the times I've played with my friends.
They've always gave me a little punch, they became my friends so darn fast.
It's like I had a magic touch,
Or will they only talk about all the times I had to wipe my baby brother's butt.

I seem to be a soccer player

But really I'm a poet
I seem to be good
But really I'm bad
I seem to be an ant
But really I'm a strong football player
I seem to be a strand of hair
But really I'm a person playing
I seem to be a blue whale
But really I'm a tiger shark, struggling for life

But really I'm a ninja practicing in a dojo
I seem to be a shark swimming
But really I'm a catfish
I seem to be a gorilla walking
But really I'm a bunny in a cage
I seem to be a clock tick-tocking
But really I'm a soccer ball, waiting to be kicked
I seem to be a book to be read
But really I'm a T-Rex, chasing a bird

ABC Poem

by Rubén Mejia, Marshall Elementary
September 2011

“Beep, beep, beep, beep, beep!” says my mean clock

Cooking in the kitchen all I hear is, “Zzzzz”
Dumb clock won’t be quiet
Escaping the room was like a maze
Finally, I actually woke up. “Beep, beep, beep, beep, beep,” says my mean clock,
but at least it stops.
