Dedication, compassion, perspective. You could easily assume these are traits of the boys and girls we write and play with (and you would be right); however, I am constantly inspired by these same attributes in the volunteers who dedicate their time and talents to deserving youth. These adults with jobs, families, and only 24 hours in a day, manage to model and live by the values America SCORES Bay Area instills in the youth we serve:
For the last four years, Othmane Belcaid has dedicated his Saturdays to Game Days. Othmane comes out to referee and lift the spirits of our families and staff alike with a sense of style and humor that has created a culture of serious soccer and serious fun. Othmane’s commitment to America SCORES youth, several with similar immigration stories to his own, has heightened the connections we have amongst coaches, kids, and families alike.
Cristian, a soccer player and dedicated referee, comes out early every Saturday morning after a 60+ hour work week at a tech start-up. Cristian recalls Saturday mornings being the best day of the week when he was a kid: waking up early in anticipation of a game, chomping down a bowl of cereal, and proudly sporting the colorful uniform and cleats that signify membership on a team. After over a year of reffing with America SCORES, Cristian says, “Saturdays are my favorite day of the week again.” He comes to Crocker to ensure fair play on the field and has gone even further, becoming a board member dedicated to the America SCORES community.
Andrew Hartman is a leader in the young professional world of finance and philanthropy. Working at Goldman Sachs and chairing the America SCORES Development Board, Andy has built a new foundation of advocates, fundraisers, and enthusiastic do-gooders who dedicate their time and talents to America SCORES youth. Andy is always present at events and the first to sign up for opportunities to engage with the kids. His drive and dedication have helped to connect and support more youth in creative and exciting new ways.
Thank you to all of our assistant coaches, referees, board members, interns, photographers, field-side librarians, event support - the list goes on. America SCORES would not be where it is today without you. The stories of those who have contributed and changed the game in our communities at school, in the office, on the field, and in the Bay Area community are endless. You are an inspiration!
