Stories from the Field: America SCORES Recess Soccer Support

On every Wednesday of each week, America SCORES runs Recess Soccer Support at Longfellow Elementary School for a full hour, which gives students the opportunity to release energy and be active before returning to class.  America SCORES coach Ashley Rodriguez runs the program at Alice Chalmers Playground Park, which is connected to Longfellow, from 12-1pm.  Ashley works with the third, fourth, and fifth graders for the first half of lunch, and first and second graders for the second half. Participation has been incredible from the students at Longfellow Elementary School.  Last week, Coach Ashley had over seventy students who participated.

America SCORES Recess Soccer Support is a new program that brings the values of America SCORES to more students through pick-up soccer games.  Students are divided into two teams with up to ten players per team. Each team receives their own color jerseys to differentiate the teams and then the ball is thrown into the field to begin the game. During the games, students are instructed to resolve any issues that arise by playing a quick game of rock-paper-scissors before getting an America SCORES Coach to step in to resolve the issue at hand.  This method of conflict resolution helps students deal with issues they face in the absence of an adult.

America SCORES Bay Area is able to bring Recess Soccer Support to Longfellow thanks to a $1,500 grant from professional soccer team, the San Jose Earthquakes, and Wells Fargo.  We would like to thank the San Jose Earthquakes and Wells Fargo for helping America SCORES Bay Area stay engaged with more youth and at more critical times of the day.

If you or someone you know would like to volunteer with America SCORES as a part of Recess Soccer Support, contact Shannon Burns, sburns@americascores.org.
