Jr. SCORES Helping Heroes to the Rescue!

Spring is Service-Learning season at Bay Area SCORES. This Spring a magic gopher-wizard who lives under the soccer field posed a special challenge to 1st and 2nd graders.

The Wizard told the coaches and players the legend of why gophers now live underground. Gophers migrated underground a long time ago, when life above ground became too selfish, polluted, and no longer fun. Now the Wizard is looking for a team of Helping Heroes who can help make the outside world a happy, safe, and fun place for the animals to live again. The Wizard will give superpowers to any student who proves that he or she is up to the challenge of improving the community.

In this story-based curriculum, Jr. SCORES players will read, think, and write about how they can use their superpowers to be heroes in their community. Teams will read the following books: I Can Help, Dex: the Heart of a Hero, The Great Kapok Tree, The Sneetches, and Michael Recycle. Students will complete workbook activities that help them apply the lessons in the stories to real issues in their communities.

At the first Saturday Game Day, players reported the first gopher-wizard sightings. Now the newly empowered Jr players are eager to get to work as SCORES Helping Heroes.
