Q: How did you get involved in SCORES?
A: I was working for the school district as a teacher at Brett Harte. I like working with kids. And when the program started, ten years ago, I thought it was a great opportunity for the kids to do both poetry and soccer ... And through the years, the kids have loved it.

Q: What is the best part of SCORES?
A: I think SCORES is one of the best things to ever happen to this school and a lot of the community. It's a nice experience being with the kids, being with their families every Saturday for Game Days, being part of their life, and really enjoying what I do.

Q: You do a lot of extra projects at Brett Harte to give back to the community. What are some of the things you've done?
A: I like to try to do something extra. Last year I did a project in El Salvador where I built two roofs for classrooms over there. It was one of the best experiences of my life ... I've also done some extra activities with the kids at school. We've sold food, sold pictures, we've had dances. And we put this money toward different activities during the year. Like, for Christmas, we have a party for the kids and their families. And then we have an end of the year party for the kids.*

Q: Favorite soccer team?
A: Barcelona.

Q: How long have you lived in the Bay Area?
A: I grew up in El Salvador, in a town called San Vicente. I moved to the Bay Area 24 years ago.

Q: What is a fact about you that not many people know?
A: I've been to war.

Q: How long did you serve in the Army?
A: 22 years. My service ends in November this year.

Q: Favorite food?
A: Linguine with clams.

*Over Winter Break, I had the pleasure of building some soccer goals with Marco at his beloved Brett Harte Elementary. For Marco, building goals is a typical example of the generosity he shows to his school, to SCORES, and to local youth. He coaches and builds with an unquestioning sense of purpose.
