Volunteer Referee Program a Success

During the Fall season, SCORES launched its first-ever Volunteer Referee program. On Saturdays, volunteers from around the Bay Area came out to Crocker Amazon park to referee games.

Americorps member Sean Cronin headed the program. A level 8 referee, Cronin helped recruit and train volunteers from area grade schools, universities, and businesses.

"I am proud of the dedication and commitment we achieved from our Volunteer Referee group," Cronin said. " I believe this year's Game Days were some of the best yet."

Cronin also helped establish a "Jr. Referee" program in which players from "Select" teams (third through fifth graders) worked as assistant referees for games involving first and second graders. Enthusiastic fourth and fifth graders shadowed Cronin and his crew, or worked as sideline referees, before Cronin handed them a whistle to work as an official referee on a Jr. field.

For all new referees, controlling the whistle was an educational and fun experience.

"It's much harder than I expected," said Eric Moessinger, a volunteer who works during the week with Nano Dimensions Inc.. "It's impossible to get everything right. But it's been a great experience."

For the Spring SCORES season ahead, Cronin hopes to grow his volunteer reffing core.

"I would like to incorporate more high school volunteers who are seeking to complete their community service hours," Cronin said.
