Two lucky Bay Area SCORES teams at Redding Elementary in the Tenderloin got the chance to meet some stars from the Women's Professional Soccer league. 30 SCORES kids participated in a free clinic on the school's blacktop led by former Women’s World Cup Champion and FC Gold Pride forward Tiffeny Milbrett and Citi Sportswoman of the Year recipient Natalie Spilger.
Angela Bailey, Soccer Director in SCORES Oakland, helped organize the event, which was sponsored by Citi as part of the bank's community-outreach program. "I think the impact is broader than the momentary excitement of having a female 'star' player on the blacktop," Bailey said. "It's the idea in a young girls mind that starts to form, that females can not only do things, play as well as males do, but that they can be successful at it. And if those female stars succeeded, those little girls can too."
In addition to participating in a soccer clinic, SCORES players and families attended the WPS Championship Game between the Bay Area's own FC Gold Pride and the Philadelphia Independence. SCORES participants helped form the "fan tunnel" on the field for the player introductions. A few players also recited poems at half time.
